My object is my Father's registation of birth. He was born on th 5th December 1899 when Mrs Pankhurst lived & worked in Manchester. The document is not in very good condition, but it clearly shows the signature of Mrs Pankhurst acting in her capacity of the Registrar for Manchester.
Her husband died in 1898 so she had to go out to work to support her four children. She was the Registrar until she moved to London in 1907.
My Father told me that he often went to meetings as a young boy with his Father to support radical workers & womens rights. There was an area in Manchester, near to Deansgate, that was a popular place for such open air meetings, I believe this was called 'Speakers Corner'. I often wonder if he ever heard Mrs Pankhurst speak. In later life he was aware that Mrs Pankhurst had registered his birth, but I do not know if he knew when he attended the meetings with his Father. As a woman who has enjoyed having the vote since I was 21, I'm really pleased that my Father & Grandfather supported the workers and the womens rights movement.
