over 168,000 merlin engines were built. 45 merlin engines produce the same power as 1 Rolls Royce Trent A90.The Merlin V12 aero engines designed and manufactured by Rolls Royce, were a key factor in British success during the Second World War. They were designed as a replacement for the smaller Kestrel engine and the decision to put them into large scale production was Henry Royce's last one before his death. Designed in 1933, their production gained priority from the Government in 1936, in tandem with the production of the Supermarine Spitfire and Hawker Hurricane. During the 17 years of Merlin engine production, 168,039 were produced and fitted into 40 different aircraft.
This Merlin III engine was produced in February 1940 and was used in a Spitfire, 2 Hurricanes and a Defiant coming out of service in 1943.
