This is a well used Starrett 1" Micrometer originally belong to T.Prendergast who was probably a toolmaker or instrument maker. It is still accurate to the 1/1000th an inch for which it was designed to measure. Without this measuring instrument and its variations, 19th & 20th century engineering and technology would not have been able to take the great strides forward it has made over the last 150 years or so.
This instrument would probably have been one of the very first purchases T.Prendergast made after completing a long five year apprenticeship in the engineering trade or of course, it could have been passed onto him by another tradesman or member of the family. It would have formed the basis of his toolkit and he could not have got through a single days work without needing to use it to make the highly accurate measurements required in his trade. It's interesting to speculate on what objects, pieces of equipment or machine tools this particular micrometer would have helped to be manufactured. Would it have been in a small specialised workshop or perhaps a large manufacturer such as Ford? We will never know.
