My great grandfather was born in 1886 and he joined the Royal Navy as a boy sailor in around 1900 when he was about 14. He started his training on H.M.S Boscawen, which was a sailing ship. He stayin the Royal Navy until around 1918.
In 1916, he was badly injured when his ship, H.M.S Irresistible, was bombed at Gallipoli in Turkey. He was taken by hospital ship to Port Alexander in Egypt to recover. The ambulance ship was a sister ship to the Titanic.
My great-grandfather collected cap bands from other ships H.M.S Pathfinder, Jupiter, Royal Arthur, Excellent, Alacrity and Minotaur. He also had a band from H.M. Canadian S Haida.
