At a time when the Lake District of England equates to leisure and free time for many, this Lake District slate, collected by me on a walk about 30 years ago, represents another time of work and toil.
I like the way it uses the rock in such a way that one still understands its origins; like the flint axes and arrowheads this slate exploits the nature of rock.
Not only does it hold a history of the slate mining and the men and ponies participating in this Lake District industry and the landscape there, it also holds a part of our building history. While it may be seen to be modern it represents a long history of activity.
Such a humble object in a way holds more impact than more 'special' ones.
