Joiner's Lid Chest - BoBC

At the end of a seven year apprenticeship, a joiner would be expected to produce his masterpiece. This lid depicts the joiner at work surrounded by his tools, including the glue used to join bits of wood together - hence he is known as a joiner. This exquisite marquetry panel demonstrates the exceptional ability of the craftsman and would have been used to demonstrate his skill to potential future clients.
