This is an object of global and local reference. Melton Mowbray, where Allen originated, is an English market town in Leicestershire. Allen, the son of Silas and Mary Allen, the former a watchmaker, was enlisted on October 2 1873 in Boston, Lincolnshire. He was killed during the Battle of Little Big Horn, one of the small force of 266 men who fought under Custer.
