This carpet loom is very rare and although it is more than 100 years old it is still in working order and is used for occasional demonstrations. Barnard Castle was once famous for its carpet weaving industry, and the punched cards on the loom were made by university students to recreate a Barnard Castle carpet design of the 1840s.
