This crucial component in the water cooling system of a nuclear power plant was manufactured for the construction of an identical facility to the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Facility at Pripyat in the Ukraine, then the Ukranian Soviet Socialist Republic. It is made from stainless steel and lead. The devastating accident which occurred on 26 April 1986 ended further construction and the unused stainless steel components, which filled the equivalent of two football fields, were shipped to Cyprus and sold as scrap. Most of the material ended up in the British Steel furnaces and this item was collected by Philip Crawford who brokered the sale.
