BMW originally built motorcycles using modified aircraft engines developed in the 1920s.

In the 1970s Whilst the car division had successfully piloted the transition from the 'bubble car' of twenty years before to their famous luxury salon vehicles, Motorcycles still had an image problem, they were no longer seen as 'cheap and cheerful' transportation for the masses and sales were being seriously eroded by sporty imports from Japan.

Whereas the British and Italian motorcycle industries all but closed down, BMW re-invented the machine in a brand new class; the heavyweight 'Big Trail' machine, the first model being introduced in 1980, and have been continually developed and sold in ever greater numbers right up to the present day.
