This piece of wire was cut from the fence at Greenham Common air base during the anti-Cruise missile protests in the 1980s. Its historical significance lies, firstly, in its association with the world-wide spread of US military bases, and increasing US hegemony, in the 20th century. Secondly, it is part of the lively tradition of peaceful protest which is a key component of democracy in Britain, Europe and America, and which is exemplified by the Greenham Common women's peace camp and the associated demonstrations.
