This was brought back from Berlin by my uncle as gift for my mum. Written on the back is a description of how a group of people came together at the end of the war and decided to create things of beauty from the rubble. According to their writings they made 100 pictures of flowers, butterflies and finally a gull. MY uncle bought this object without any hatred towards the people whom only a short time previously were the enemy, whether he felt compassion for the defeated people, just liked the picture I do not know. I am the second generation to have ownership, my daughter has her ownership stamped on it. Whenever I look at it , or read the words on the back I feel a great sympathy with those trying to eke out an existence after the war. This struggle goes on today, with such tragedies as Haiti at this moment, and will always symbolize man's triumph over adversity.
