Bonnie Prince Charlie brought the canteen with him to Scotland while attempting to regain his father's lost crowns. The 18th century equivalent of a picnic set, it was lost by Prince Charles at the Battle of Culloden in April 1746. The defeat at Culloden led to the failure of the 1745-6 Jacobite Rising, the best known of several armed attempts to win back the crowns of England and Scotland for the Stewarts who as direct descendants of King James II (James VII of Scotland) refused to recognise the legitimacy of the monarchs since being deposed in 1688.
