This pigskin hol-dall belonged to the female flying ace, Amy Johnson, who was born in Hull in 1930. Amy Johnson's initials, originally in gold leaf, are between the handles. This battered brown leather travelling bag was one of two items recovered from the site of Amy's fatal crash into the Thames Estuary on May 1 1941. The bag was watertight and therefore floated. It was given to some friends by Amy's parents after her death and subsequently donated to Sewerby Hall. It can be seen in at least one photograph of Amy taken before she set off on a record-breaking flight.
