Map of the Northern Hemisphere, 1946. Produced by the National Geographical Society, Washington DC. The North Pole is at the centre with the equator forming the outer circumference. It was given to me by someone I dearly love and the unusual projection from directly above the North Pole captured my interest and helped to inspire in me an enthusiasm for history for which I will be eternally grateful. Maps of any kind are historical documents telling us mans picture of the world at that time. Maps document the findings of travellers and explorers and are in themselves a history of navigation and discovery. Behind each new map is a story of people - people who have the courage to venture into lands unknown. The maps of their adventures have enabled others to travel and see new places, meet new people and spread and settle across all areas of our world. I would hope that future generations preserve and treasure these historic records of how people explored and perceived our world and that maps such as mine act as an inspiration to find out more about our past so that they can fully understand the present.
