This sash belonged to John Cadman (died 1949). He held the office of Past Chief Ranger of the Wigan Branch of the Ancient Order of Foresters (AOF) Friendly Society. Before the existence of the Welfare State friendly societies provided a vital social service. Members contributed to a financial fund and were entitled to received benefits from this fund during times of sickness or death.
The AOF had its own highly symbolic regalia. Sashes such as this one would have been worn with pride at anniversary parades or other social events. Official regalia could be purchased or you could make your own to save expense. This sash appears to be handmade with the metal lettering 'PCR', silk panel, star-shaped cushion and metal lettering sewn on to an ordinary scarf.
This item is on display at the Museum of Wigan Life, Library Street, Wigan.
