This is a commemorative sample taken from the first ton of polythene (polyethylene) produced by ICI at their Wallerscote plant in 1938, following their discovery of it in 1933. These were presented to the small team of ICI scientists that discovered polythene, and the initials G.F. refer to George Feachem (my maternal Grandfather) who was the chemist 'on watch' in 1933 when polyethylene first materialised. It took five years following the discovery to consistently reproduce the chemistry, yet large plants were in operation on the eve of WW11, where it proved a valuable material to the war effort, and onwards to this day.
This token sat in his wallet until the day he died, and was only recently re-discovered to see the light of day again.
