Taj Mahal Tapestry

Contributed by Karen Bateman

This tapestry, handed down by my Gt Grandfather, depicts the beautiful Taj Mahal and dates back to the late 19th Century, and was woven by a soldier, by candlelight, in a tent in India. It is thought that the soldier who created this tapestry gave it to my Great Grandfather, who served in India with the Royal Horse Artillery, possibly for cigarettes. There is another tapestry depicting the Cawnpore which came from the same source at the same time.
