Roles and responsibilities

  • Richard is the Director of News Content - responsible for more than 800 journalists in the UK and around the world who provide content for Â鶹Éç News across digital, television and radio.
  • News Content has international and UK bureaux as well as specialist teams covering a range of subject areas including politics, money and work, UK affairs, health, climate and culture. Richard is also responsible for the On The Day newsdesk team, planning and Â鶹Éç Verify, a unit working on forensic open source journalism and fact checking.

Biography

Richard took on the leadership of the News Content department on an interim basis in 2022 and helped oversee the coverage of the Queen’s death, the Ukraine war, political upheaval in the UK and a cost of living crisis.

He was appointed to the role of Director of News Content permanently in November 2022 and sits on the News Board. His department provides coverage of major news events, live breaking news as well as investigations and original journalism.

Previously, Richard was the Executive News Editor running the Â鶹Éç’s UK newsgathering teams from 2016 during which time he led coverage of many big stories including Covid, Grenfell, London terror attacks and the Manchester Arena bombing. During his spell as UK Editor, Â鶹Éç News won the Home News Award three times at the RTS Television Awards including for the agenda-setting coverage of Molly Russell’s tragic death.

Richard began his career in newspapers working at the Grimsby Evening Telegraph and the Manchester Evening News, during which time he wrote a book on Manchester City’s fluctuating fortunes, before moving to Â鶹Éç Manchester and later Â鶹Éç Sport. In 2010, he was appointed the Â鶹Éç’s Head of Sports News and later also leading the Radio Sport department. He oversaw the teams’ move to Media City in Salford, as well as the radio and sports news coverage of London 2012.

Central bookings are costs incurred on behalf of the Â鶹Éç and booked through the Â鶹Éç's central bookings system. Both expenses and central bookings are published every three months.
