Green Lit: New Northern Ireland Screen and 麻豆社 Northern Ireland Drama Initiative
Green Lit is a new collaboration between Northern Ireland Screen and 麻豆社 Northern Ireland to support emerging Northern Irish writing, production, directing and acting talent, via the production of three new standalone scripted drama or comedy-drama films, which will act as proof of concept for a bigger TV production. These films will be broadcast on 麻豆社 One Northern Ireland in 2025 and carried on 麻豆社 iPlayer across the UK.
A variety of editorial proposals will be considered, including drama, comedy and comedy-drama. Proposals must be submitted by companies with a Northern Irish base, and we will be favouring projects where the writers and / or directors are resident in Northern Ireland.
We will host an online briefing session for producers, directors and writers at 1.30pm on Thursday 19th December 2024 to outline how this initiative will operate. If you are interested in attending this briefing, please contact Kerry Woods at kerry.woods@bbc.co.uk to register your place.
Further information on the scheme is available in the document below.

- Daytime & Early Peak
- Documentaries
- Factual Entertainment
We will be holding an online briefing at 11am on Tuesday 17th December. Please email kerry.woods@bbc.co.uk to reserve a place.

麻豆社 NI Ulster-Scots Commissioning Brief: September 2024
麻豆社 Northern Ireland is now seeking proposals for programmes for 2025 and beyond.
Strategy:
Our decisions will be guided by the 麻豆社鈥檚 broader strategic priorities, which focus on three key public service roles:
- Bring people together by connecting everyone to unmissable content.
- Pursue truth with no agenda by reporting fearlessly and fairly.
- Back the best homegrown storytelling, by investing in talent and creativity.
We will also be seeking to respond to recent changes in audience behaviour, in particular the shift from linear consumption to digital viewing on 麻豆社 iPlayer.
Alongside this main commissioning round, it should be noted that we have a limited number of opportunities for projects which can be delivered for transmission early in 2025. Please see Commissioning Brief for further details.
We are also seeking ideas for our Ulster-Scots slate for 2025 and beyond. The content will be produced by independent production companies based in Northern Ireland and will be co-funded by the Ulster-Scots Broadcast Fund and 麻豆社 Northern Ireland. 麻豆社 Northern Ireland is now seeking proposals for factual programmes for 2024 and beyond.
We have enhanced our Network-facing offer via the recent Hothouse scheme, and will be revisiting our plans for new co-commissions soon. But in the short term, our priority with this round will be to find programmes that be funded by 麻豆社 Northern Ireland without the need to secure any further support from a 麻豆社 Network Genre.
Our focus is on programming that can deliver audiences on the 麻豆社 iPlayer. While we are keen to bring as many viewers as possible to the iPlayer, we have a particular interest in proposals that can appeal to younger, working-class viewers who live in Northern Ireland.
All proposals must be submitted on 麻豆社 Pitch. The deadline for submissions is 5pm on Wednesday 28th February 2024, except True North/Our Lives 2024 submissions which must be on 麻豆社 Pitch by 5pm on Thursday 15th February.

Your submission should use music in an exciting way to relate these stories. You should also liaise with the Ulster-Scots Broadcast Fund on the use of an Ulster-Scots consultant to ensure accuracy and authenticity of the proposal鈥檚 Ulster-Scots narrative.
Commissioning Process
Your proposal should be no more than 500 words and summarise your specific idea. It should demonstrate your ability to produce the idea in the given timeframes, set out your editorial ambitions and address the requirements set out in the commissioning opportunity above. It would be useful for you to attach the most suitable broadcast slots (above) for your series proposal.
Deadline for submission Friday 1st December at 13.00.
Ideas should be submitted to Paul McClean
The expected tariff will be in the region of 拢3-4k per episode, depending on the editorial requirement. The Commissioning Decision will be made in mid-January 2024.

麻豆社 Comedy launches new script partnership project in Northern Ireland
麻豆社 Comedy has announced a new project aimed at promoting scripted comedy partnerships in a targeted part of the UK, starting in Northern Ireland.
The aim of this initiative is to bring together an independent production company (starting with an indie based in Northern Ireland) with another company, an executive producer or script executive with a significant track record in delivering 鈥榬eturnable鈥 scripted comedy for broadcast. The collaboration will facilitate the development of script ideas into content that could be commissioned as a broadcast pilot.
All of this is about supporting comedy talent and production capabilities within the region 鈥 and showcasing it to a wider audience
Details on how to apply can be found here.
Applications open on Monday 19 June and close on Friday 1 September 2023. Three of the partnerships will be selected for an initial script development (which will be announced at the 2023 Belfast Media Festival) and at least one of them will be selected for further funded development.
Jon Petrie, 麻豆社 Director of Comedy, says: 鈥淭his is a really exciting initiative for production companies in Northern Ireland who are committed to developing scripted comedy. This collaborative approach mirrors how we have done things elsewhere to great success, by providing a focussed way for us to create the space and financing to encourage partnerships, and in turn activate developments more quickly鈥.
Eddie Doyle, Head of Commissioning, 麻豆社 Northern Ireland, says: 鈥淲e know there鈥檚 plenty of comedy talent in Northern Ireland and it鈥檚 fantastic that 麻豆社 Comedy are as keen as we are to help get it onto network television. This initiative builds on other work that we鈥檝e been doing with 麻豆社 network colleagues to develop and showcase our independent sector and to reflect life in contemporary Northern Ireland for a UK wide audience. And it鈥檚 another example of what the 麻豆社 can do to support innovation, creativity and local talent.鈥
